I first met Brandi Jordan when my son was born in 2009 and I have been following her incredible journey ever since. Brandi is a self described “globetrotting doula” who holds a BA in child development, a master’s of social work from USC, where she is also adjunct faculty lecturing in the area of infant mental health and culturally competent mental health care and is a board certified lactation consultant, pediatric sleep specialist, newborn care specialist and postpartum doula. She is also an amazing entrepreneur. She is the founder and owner of The Cradle Company and works as a consultant, a parenting group leader, and in-home practitioner to develop a unique philosophy of gentle parenting that helps parents approach their new family with pragmatic, practical and healthy tools. In 2018, Brandi founded the National Association of Birth Workers of Color.

Brandi is a force to be reckoned with and one of the best people i could possibly to think of to offer a little advice on how to approach life with a gentle, thoughtful and conscious intention.

Amy Powell: Is there one piece of advice that you wish your 9 year old self would give you today that would make an impact on your career?

Brandi Jordan: I loved being 9. I would only let my 9 year old self know that everything, including mistakes will be useful to my career and my Life as an adult.

Amy: Was there a time you messed up and felt like you’d failed? how did you bounce back?

Brandi: I’ve “failed” many times. Success is really just a series of failing until you figure out the right path. Bouncing back is understanding that failing is part of her journey as I’ve gotten older and wiser I’m able to bounce back easier and faster!

Amy: How did you learn to embrace risk-taking?

Brandi: I’ve always been a risk taker, but i think fir most of us risk taking starts with betting on yourself and your ideas when it might seem crazy to others. For me it was leaving home and moving to Los Angeles as the first step in doing something that didn’t quite make sense, but ended up being one of the best decisions of my life.

Amy: What’s the most important leadership lesson you’ve learned and how has it proven invaluable?

Brandi: Humility. Most people think leadership is about being stoic, but I have found that I can best rally my team behind the cause in the times when I’ve been vulnerable about what needs to be accomplished and have shared my fears about getting there.

Amy: What is the most fun part of your job?

Brandi: Meeting so many new people
